SATURDAY EOM DANCES

 OCTOBER

When27 October 2018  8pm – 11.30pm
Theme: From Convicts to the Ballroom
Band: Canberra Mandolin Orchestra
Caller: Colin Towns
Where: Canberra Baptist Church, Currie Cres, Kingston – Location map

Formed in 2003, the Canberra Mandolin Orchestra (CMO) brings together players of mandolin, mandola, mandocello, guitar and bass. It keeps alive the rich tradition of the mandolin groups that emerged in the first couple of decades of the 20th century. The CMO’s repertoire is very varied, showcasing the interests and versatility of its musicians.

Since the very early days of settlement dancing has played a very important role in Australian social life, providing not only recreation, but also contributing to social cohesion and a sense of belonging. In line with the theme “from Convicts to the Ballroom” the October end of month dance program will feature music and dances from the earliest Colonial period through to Federation, with a few Folk Society dancers’ favourites thrown into the mix. This theme was featured in a recent concert at the Albert Hall and some of our Dancers performed a number of the dances – so this is your chance to do them for your own fun and enjoyment.

Cost: Entry is just $18, $16 for group and concessions, $14 for MFS members (you can join at the door), students half price, under 18s free.  Please bring a plate for supper to share and, if you can, wear something inspired by the “from Convicts to the Ballroom” theme (this is optional and not a condition of entry).
